Setting Up Personal VPN on Windows 8
TO INSTALL:
Click on the Desktop icon shown above
Download the software from the links provided in the email we sent you with your user credentials
To install, the application has to be Run as Administrator:
After downloading, right-click on the file and select ‘Run as Administrator’. The following screen will pop up, if the UAC is enabled on your computer:
Click ‘More Info’ and the screen will expand
Click ‘Run anyway’
Click ‘Next’
Where prompted, Click ‘Next’,’ I Agree’ or ‘Install’ on the screens that follow
The installation of the TAP adapter, which is the virtual adapter the VPN works over, requires permission to install — Click ‘Install’
(Note: The installation of the TAP adapter can sometimes take up to a minute. Do not exit the installer while the TAP adapter is being processed)
The installation will continue and you will end up at the successful install screen
Click ‘Next’
Click ‘Finish’ and exit out of any remaining windows
TO CONFIGURE PERMISSIONS:
Go back to the Start menu page (clicking the Menu key on your keyboard will take you there). We will now set the program to ‘Run as Administrator’ so that routing through the VPN can be enabled. You only have to do this once.
Launch Personal VPN GUI
Right-Click on the OpenVPN-GUI icon, then click on ‘Open file location’ at the bottom of the screen
Right-click on the file called ‘OpenVPN GUI’
Check the box that says ‘Run this program as an administrator’
Hit ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’
Exit out of the window
TO CONNECT
Double-click on the ‘OpenVPN – GUI’ tab on the Start page to take you back to your desktop
Launch the program into the lower right hand task bar
Click on the up arrow in the task bar to reveal all icons
Right-click on the icon and you will see the connection options
Pick a connection location and the log-in screen will appear (note: the image above is only a representation. Your actual pick list may be different)
Enter your credentials
When the icon turns from red to green you are connected
